Prof. Shiratori's Activity
in Democratization Assistance

     Professor Rei Shiratori, as political scientist and as President of the Institute for Political Studies in Japan (IPSJ), has assisted democratization processes in newly democratized countries in Asia and in Central Europe  in cooperation with IFES in Washington DC and with International IDEA in Stockholm.
     For example, he served as a member of the International Advisory Council in IFES and assisted the establishment of the Asian Association of Election Authorities (AAEA) since 1998. He was engaged, in this connection, in the international observation of General Election of Indonesia in June 1999 and Kosovo municipal election in October 2000.

     Professor Shiratori visited Nepal from March 26 to  April 2, 2000, and met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala. He also made lectured in Kathomandu Campus and Pokhara Campus of National Tribhuvan University. Professor Shiratori assisted democratization processes of Nepal in 1990.

     This year he attended and lectured in the International IDEA-SADAC Conference on "Towards Sustainable Democratic Institutions in Southern Africa" organized by International IDEA in Gaborone in Botswana from May 8 to May 10. He also participated in the publication of "Handbook on Party Funding" by International IDEA.
   He is also scheduled to participate in the international election observation of Kosovo Municipal Election on October 28 2000.
