Plants for Warm Tropical Greenhouses

We recommend the plants below for tropical climates and heated greenhouses. These plants should not be grown in areas where the minimum temperature will reach 65 degrees or lower.

9901 Red Traveler's Palm Ravenala Guyanensis

A rare form of the well known Traveler's palm Ravenala Madagascariensis, this is actually not a palm, but a relative of the banana plant. A very striking specimen outside in zone 10 or higher, it can reach 50 ft. or more when mature. It's name is derived from the fact that the flower bracts and leaf sheaths hold rainwater, which a weary traveler could use when no other water source was available. It has huge palm like leaves that can reach 12 feet long and over a foot wide. Seeds sport bright red arils ( Ravenala M. are blue, thus the name ). Makes a striking inside houseplant when young, it will eventually outgrow most containers.
